As much as I often don’t like LA, I have a hard time coming up with a city that I’d rather be living in. What other large city is within 4 hours of the Sierras? And offers excellent day and weekend outing on the rocks? I’ve had a difficult time getting outdoors to climb this fall since I currently teach a class on Saturdays and my knee has been bothering me making my hesitant to take on long approaches.
However, I was able to spend a couple Sundays in Joshua Tree National Park. The first one I spent with @peakbaggingchick and despite the fact that it was a weekend and weather was perfect in the park it was remarkably uncrowded. We went to Hemingway wall and I started by onsighting the 5.10a climb “PrePackaged”. This being my second 5.10 send in jtree and my first 5.10 onsight, I felt good about my day right away. However, I later got my ass kicked on the much more strenuous 5.10a “Head over Heels” which has a burly roof to pull at the crux.
A few weeks later I went to camp and climb with my climbing partner who was heading up there to meet some friends. I was able to take some photos of the stars as it was a clear, moonless night. We got up the next day and got on some routes at Conan’s Corridor, where I led Colorado Crack, before heading over to Hidden Valley so my partner could lead the Joshua Tree classic, Double Cross.

Both days ended atop intersection rock, a great place to watch the sunset (though we didn’t get any brilliant colors). First via the flake and then by way of overhang bypass. While they were graded 5.8 and 5.7 respectively I thought both had really scary finishes. The flake with a delicate slab and overhang bypass with a steep finish up a rail with questionable protection and a scary mantle to (thank heavens) a bolt. But the position was hard to beat and while the clouds didn’t turn any brilliant colors the views of the park from the top were still well worth it.
